Anything But Cute Mixed Media Challenge Blog - challenge #10

Hello, my friends!
It's time for another challenge at Anything But Cute mixed media challenge blog!
The hostess for this challenge is our lovely and super talented Sara Emily who has chosen the theme 'Grungy Love'!

To celebrate St. Valentine's Day, we would like to see you make a Grungy Valentine's project for your sweetheart!  It can be a card, tag, or anything else you might give a loved one to show them how much you care. Just be sure it's grungy!

I came up with this grungy cardboard Valentine card I created for my husband. Since I used a lot of stuff from my hubby's workshop bench I hope he is going to like it haha!

I started with a piece of cardboard and my acrylic paints in blue tones.

I used my Liquitex gloss medium to glue down the Tim Holtz tissue paper on top of the painted cardboard.  I tried to wrinkle the paper as much as I could to add some texture to it.

I sprayed it using a lot of different Dylusions sprays, Lindy's stamp gang sprays and some Distress stain sprays in blue and brown tones.

To create a kind of some metallic texture, I mixed my glossy accent with two of my PearlEx powders, in gold and in blue and randomly applied those mixtures with my palette knife.

My grunge heart was created out of some jigsaw puzzle pieces and I attached some chicken wire onto my background. For the word LOVE I used some plastic alphabet letters, those are actually magnets for kids and a bottle cap with some metal flower inside. I put a coat of black gesso over my embellishments and used my Inka gold paints for some highlighting.  I also find some spiral wire pieces and added them to my letters.

Here is a close up look of my puzzle heart with some metal little roses and a Tim Holtz arrow attached with a piece of a wire.

Those metal corners are from my husband's workshop and I added some copper beads.

I used my dry brush with white gesso here and there.

That's it for today! I hope you like my grungy card!

At Anything But Cute we just love to see all the seasoned and expert mixed media artists, but we also want to encourage those who are just getting their feet wet. Our design team will always be on the lookout for these exceptional projects and artists. You just never know when we might be giving out something special to a lucky mixed media newcomer. We all have to start somewhere, right?

Challenge runs until March 4th - we can't wait to see what you come up with! Happy Crafting!

Hugs! Branka xxx

  3. Wow, Branka, you have collected so many ingenious ideas and put them all in one place on this fabulous piece of art! there are so many details to look at, but it all looks so well placed and is perfectly colored for a cohesive design. My favorite details are the used of a puzzle, the chicken wire and those tiny flowers on the edge of the (gorgeous) heart. but your background is the piece de resistance! (Sorry, I don't know how to use my keyboard in French.)I'm so happy you shared your steps with us--it's a work of art! Love this, and I'm sure your husband will, too, once he gets over the dismay of having his supplies pilfered! Big hugs, my friend!

  4. Like it?? I love it!! I just love the Glossy Accent technique (one to try for sure), the puzzle heart with the little roses is gorgeous and the chicken wire and the other embellies just adds so much wonderful dimension - the little copper beads are a delight. A truly fabulous make, how could he possibly not love it!! Hugs, Anne xx

  5. Oh my gracious - you DID go to the workshop Branka - or in my case... the barn!!! Hehehehehhe!!! This is INDUSTRIALLY DELICIOUS GRUNGE. Wow. The chicken wire is my fav part over the LUSCIOUS BACKGROUND. But that bottle cap flower is nearly as wonderful. LOVE THIS. This is so inspiring. I have a tackle box with all these things in it - the metal corners, the springs, the nuts etc etc... you have inspired me to pull it all out - haven't done that in a long time. It will be fun!!!! Hugs.j.
