Anything But Cute Mixed Media Challenge Blog - Challenge #9

Happy New Year, my friends!
Can you believe it's 2016 already! I hope you had a wonderful winter holidays time!
I am here today to announce our first challenge for 2016 at Anything But Cute and
our fabulous Anne has chosen the theme Ring out the Old, Bring in the New!

To celebrate the New Year, we would like you to create a mixed media card or project using something 'new'. Perhaps you got some fabulous new craft item for Christmas or you have something new that you have not used yet - just remember to tell us what the new item is!

I created a vintage looking art journal page using some of my new art supplies I've got for Christmas.
Here is the final result :)

These are some of my new art supplies. I also got some acrylic inks, markers, more paints, watercolors and such.

I started with my old book and ephemera pieces. I also used pieces of paper from an old music note book and an old dictionary. Liquitex matte medium was used to glue down those pieces in creating some texture.

I put a coat of white gesso with my pallete knife.

To distress the edges I used distress stain in Vintage photo and I applied my new acrylic paint.

This is the finished look of my background.

I decided to use my favourite image from Paper Whimsy on a piece of canvas previously sprayed with some of my Distress stain sprays and Perfect Pearl mists. I scribbled around the image to add some interest to it and used my Golden Soft Gel matte on top of the image to achive more texture.

Distress stain in Brushed corduroy was used on torn pieces of masking tape to achieve an aged effect.

I added a piece of corrugated cardboard treated with my Inka golds in blue tones. Also, I doddled with my fluorescent oil pastels. To frame the image I used my Faber Castell Gelatos in gold.

I attached some paper roses with my previously treated masking tape pieces. Also, I used some Tim Holtz stamps to add more texture.

A piece of an old handmade lace was distressed with Distress stain sprays and I added my handmade fabric flower. I used my Crafty Notions rust powder on that metal brad in the centre of my flower.

For the quote I used Tim's small chat stickers and I used my Inktense black pencil for journaling.

At Anything But Cute we just love to see all the seasoned and expert mixed media artists, but we also want to encourage those who are just getting their feet wet. Our design team will always be on the lookout for these exceptional projects and artists. You just never know when we might be giving out something special to a talented mixed media newcomer. We all have to start somewhere, right?

Challenge runs until February 4th, 2016 - we can't wait to see what you come up with!

Thank you so much for stopping by and leaving a sweet comment! It means much to me!

Hugs! Branka x

  16. B, this is vintage beauty at its best! My fave part is the masking tape holding the flowers! Genius use of masking tape and it looks so wonderfully aged! Amazeballs! Your journal LOs always amaze me, you add so many layers, textures and details! What kind of journal do you use? I have a little one but am not happy with the way the papers warp after applying paints and sprays. Hugz to you muffin! ~Niki
